Support the Frogner Kitchen Book: Brunost & Pandan, A Cookbook of Sourdough & Connections
Our goal is to raise 350 000kr to pay a professional writer and produce this inspiring book.
Hi, my name is May. I'm the founder & baker behind Frogner Kitchen.
My personal background
Frogner Kitchen started out as a hobby during the pandemic in 2020. Like many immigrants entering a new land, I found it hard to make meaningful connections with people. I left behind my network, my roots, and my familiarities in the hope of forging a new path in this beautiful Nordic nation.
When the pandemic hit, this already challenging task became nearly impossible.
In the heart of these trials, baking became my comfort. For my children, my friends, for those who came knocking on our door, and for those who just happened to be in the vicinity. I blended the warmth of my homeland’s traditions with the rich, intriguing flavours I discovered in Norway. Each knead, each bake, each offering became a bridge, pulling me closer to the community.
Baking has helped me grow more than I ever imagined
My baking journey has transformed me over the past three years. Now, every loaf and every slice speaks a story of my culinary adventures, my growth, and my bond with Norway.
With this story, I would like to inspire others who have ever felt a bit lost.
The Frogner Kitchen Book
Every day, individuals and stores are buying my unique sourdough breads with fillings like brunost, coconut, jalapeno, cheddar, moringa, turmeric, and even tuna!
Now we are bringing those recipies to you in a book so you can make these delicious breads at home.
This is a cuilinary journey through the lens of an immigrant in Norway. It combines:
- International cuisine and culture
- An inspiring story of leaving Malaysia and finding belonging in Norway
- Delicious recipes for filled sourdough breads that any home baker can master
Why this project will succeed
Since our humble beginnings as a home baker, we have grown to 6700+ followers on IG and a 5.0 star rating on Google
There are already over 280 articles on IG describing how I create my bread through a cultural mix.
I have partenered with local businesses, became an ambassador for the Oslo expat community, and been interviewed on the Norwegian Newcomers podcast.
We have come so far.
We have collaborated with Oslo Soup, a micro-granting foodie experience that supports community-based projects, and worked with several prominent businesses and organisations.
Within three years, what began as a simple hobby transformed into an intriguing business venture. My name is May, and this is my journey. I wholeheartedly believe this story deserves to be shared. ❤️
Our writer
Hi, I'm Matthew Davidson. I'm a writer and editor with a background in bioengineering and a love of food. I founded Davidson Science Consulting to help people like May tell their stories.
I chose to take on this project because May's story is also my story. I too moved here as a trailing spouse and struggled to find belonging.
Over the past few years, I've written several articles on this topic and come to understand just how many people share our story. And it's not just immigrants, even Norwegians sometimes struggle to find belonging here.
This book is going to resonate with everyone who feels a little lost. And teach you how to make tasty bread.
Our timeline, commitment, and disclaimers
Our goal is to achieve 350 000kr by end of this year. We will use these funds to pay our writer and cover the costs of producing and publishing this book.
We will spend the rest of 2023 raising funds and understanding the publishing system in Norway. Early in 2024 we will begin developing the story and converting recipies from a professional bakery to a home kitchen. The majority of 2024 will be spent writing the book.
We expect the book to be ready for printing and shipping in time for the 2024 holiday season.
We will provide updates from frognerkitchen.no blog every 2 weeks for transparency of all our activities (ie. what have we started, achieved, missed, planned for next 2 weeks).
Disclaimer: In the event that we are unable to meet the target of 300k, we will again announce what we will do with the money, either to pivot to on a smaller scale, or do a partial refund.
